EMC GLANDS INDISPENSABLE AGAINST ELECTROMAGNETIC DISTURBANCES

A small disturbance can have major consequences. Shielded cables keep out high-frequency influences from outside but also from inside, for example signals or pulses from nearby devices. This works well until a cable is fed into an enclosure or cabinet. At this critical transition point, the right cable gland is required to provide protection against electromagnetic disturbances.

Especially in an industrial environment, with more and more devices prohibited by the wireless internet, it is very important that sensor data reaches the operator or analyst undisturbed. Even a minimal disturbance can cause a false alarm or falsely light up an indicator that a tank is empty. Such a disturbance can have many causes. Someone switching on a device or turning on the lights can be enough. Sometimes it's drive systems or air handling units that kick in and send out an electromagnetic pulse unnoticed.

EMC GLAND TURNS A CABINET INTO A FARADAY CAGE

Shielded cables keep distorting signals out. However, where they enter a cabinet, a risk does arise. Each opening, however small, can still allow a signal through, with all its consequences. An EMC gland or cable grommet draws electromagnetic disturbances away from the shielding of the cable through the enclosure. The housing thus remains impermeable to this type of radiation, like a Faraday cage. Components in the housing are thus optimally protected.

SECURITY THROUGH INTEGRATED CLAMPING SYSTEM

There are many variants of glands on the market offering EMC shielding. A proven variant is the one with an integrated clamp. This clamp evenly contacts the braided shield around the cable. The great advantage of this technique is that it makes cables resistant to dynamic applications, such as in a moving panel. Moreover, the accurate fitting and securing of the shielding is less laborious than with traditional systems.

Hummel's EMC cable gland (M-EMV-D) features such a clamping system. It makes this gland an indispensable part of your strategy to minimise the risk of interference. The most important measure to achieve this goal is to connect equipment correctly. That is to say: according to the manufacturer's instructions.

EMC glands are thus, compared to standard glands, suitable to protect sensitive signal lines against electromagnetic disturbances. If they are equipped with an integrated clamping system, they also make cables resistant to dynamic loading.

Stimac - Good technical support for ever-changing specifications
If the description for an automation project is clear from the start, it is easy for the industrial automation specialist to give it substance. In practice, however, specifications often change during the course of a project. This happened to Stimac/SNK when designing the control technology for a horticultural machine. For the problems that arose during the process, itsme quickly provided Stimac/SNK with a solution. “When a customer calls us, we respond immediately. So it’s nice to have a supplier like itsme who can also help immediately.”
